Helping with Horsepower

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Helping with Horsepower – Motorcycle Rebuild Program
While rebuilding a motorcycle is not a new concept, Laura knows that building and racing motorcycles requires teamwork and this is a message she delivers to empower youth. Laura’s motorcycle had helped her through numerous hard times. In 2011 Laura began an organization called Helping with Horsepower, the goal of the organization was to use the rebuilding of a motorcycle as a inspiration and metaphor for rebuilding one’s life. The Helping with Horsepower Biker rebuild program was setup as a 20 week classroom project, the goal was to repair and customize a Harley-Davidson Heritage Softtail with help from the girls ages 7to17 living at the Abbott House a private residential treatment center. By the end of the 20 week project over 40 girls from ages 9 to 17 had worked on the motorcycle. The rebuild project gave the girls the opportunity to learn more about teamwork, self confidence, and problem solving.
